GAN BEI 乾杯 is a story about Rose Lou, a 30-year-old Taiwanese American immigrant who moved from Taiwan to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming a successful actress. When Rose was accepted into an acting school in LA, she had to choose between her ex-fiancé Eric and her dream. She chose to follow her dream.
After 7 years of struggling, nothing big happens as she dreams of reconnecting with her past. She lost touch with Eric and he appears to have vanished. Plagued by guilt and loneliness, Rose decides to travel to Taiwan to reconnect with her past and find her lost love.
After Rose arrives in Taiwan, she goes on the journey to look for Eric who has moved out of Taipei where they used to live together. She travels to different places in Taiwan following information she gets from friends or people who know Eric, but the more she chases him, the more distant he becomes. She finally realizes that some people, once you miss them, they are gone forever.
Ready to head back to LA, Rose discovers a letter in a hidden compartment of her backpack, a gift Eric gave to her at the airport. The letter is from Eric. Eric was diagnosed with cancer around the time when Rose was accepted into acting school. He didn’t want to stop Rose from pursuing her dream so he kept it a secret. He went on his own journey after Rose left.
